Sebelum aku mula apa-apa, biar aku paparkan manisan dahulu:-
TWENTY one films will feature in the 17th Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Film Festival 2004 (FFM17) from June 25-27.
The figure is the highest ever and is proof that the local film industry is doing well, even if the same can't be said of the ticket sales.
Even the controversy on the eligibility of the four films produced by Metrowealth Movies Production has been settled.
The four films – Mistik, Jutawan Fakir, Cinta Kolestrol and Kuliah Cinta – will compete in the festival after all.
Only two films – Buai Laju Laju and Bicara Hati – were rejected. Buai Laju Laju was turned down as it's still in video format while Bicara Hati's won't make it due to its late submission.
Among the films expected to be nominated in the main categories are Janji Diana, Trauma, Berlari Ke Langit, Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam, Paloh, Bintang Hati and Cinta Kolestrol.
Out of those, four are expected to battle it out in the top four categories – Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Film and Best Director.
They are Tayangan Unggul's Trauma and Berlari Ke Langit, Pesona Pictures' Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam and Finas' Paloh.
Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam, Berlari Ke Langit and Trauma have also been chosen to represent Malaysia at the Asia Pacific Film Festival in October.
Although it's still too early to know which films will be nominated in the main categories, it's is safe to predict Gila Bola, Bisikan Remaja, Aku Kaya The Movie and Di Ambang Misteri are highly unlikely to be picked as the top three nominees.
The main categories up for grabs are Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Film.
These are the possible contenders in the four most prestigious categories:
• FOR Best Actress, the most likely nominees are Maya Karin for Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam, Nasha Aziz for Trauma and Janet Khoo for Paloh. However, Erra Fazira may also get the nod for Cinta Kolestrol. But there's no doubt the vampire (Maya Karin) will go head on with the psychotic killer (Nasha Aziz).
• For Best Actor, the top three nominees might be Rosyam Noor (Berlari Ke Langit), Azri Iskandar (Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam) and Nam Ron (Paloh). My money's on Rosyam Noor whose acting in Berlari Ke Langit is simply superb.
• For Best Director, the three directors who might compete are Shuhaimi Baba for Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam, Aziz M. Osman for Trauma and Badaruddin Azmi for Berlari Ke Langit. It'll be interesting to see if Badaruddin will repeat the success of KL MenJerit that bagged him the Best Director award.
Of course, the same three films – Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam, Trauma and Berlari Ke Langit – are expected to be nominated in this category. All three are fine movies, each with its own strengths. It won't be an easy task for judges to decide which one is most deserving.
Wow, seronoknya tahun ni. Nampak seperti filem-filem Melayu mula bergerak dan bergerak. Mula bernafas, hidup.
Tapi aku agak bertanya, adakah Buli, Gila-Gila Pengantin Remaja, Big Durian, Gedebe, Lang Buana tak masuk? Dan Buai Laju-Laju kerna format 'video'nya maka ia ditiadakan? Bagaimana pula dengan filem-filem underground? Aku harap FINAS lebih terbuka dan bukan mengambil filem 'mainstream' sahaja, sebab filem-filem seperti Capturing The Friedmans, Thirteen, Requiem For A Dream aku rasa jenis filem-filem 'independen' juga yang ditayangkan dalam wayang arthouse orang puteh (dan bukan di wayang-wayang besar, kalau ia 'meletup', baru ditayangkan di wayang-wayang biasa). Apa pun, nadi filem kita dah mula berjalan!
Aku rasa tahun ni, Berlari Ke Langit akan menang besar, dan terkemudian Paloh, Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam dan Trauma (tapi aku masih sukakan Gila-Gila Pengantin Remaja). Tengok gezet 'Berlari' pun dah naik bulu roma, macam filem 'puitis' yang dibuat oleh Garin Nugroho pula.
